This is a short rendition of a scene involving one of the stories I’ve been slowly writing as time permits. I thought I’d throw a random draft into my blog and just see how I feel about it. I hope it gets some positivity. This will likely change as I bring this story together, but I thought sharing a bit might be good for me.
Alexis awoke with a start, unsure for a moment where she was, but slowly she came to her senses. The loft she slept in was quite barren besides the window looking over the village on the far side of the room. She wasn’t used to being surrounded by so much vegitation and the quiet calmness that seemed to come with the area, quite a stark contrast to the close knit city she grew so accustomed to.
A lot had changed already in her life, meeting Vivian who took her in due to her color change. All her life she had become used to the red coloration that dominated her body, but when the shift happened that her color started to show patches of blue it terrified her. What would happen if her guardians found out, or anyone else for that matter. Although Vivian was stubborn and irritable, something about Alexis’s color change has given her a change of heart.
At the end of the day though, she was here in this village and safer from the oppression of her old life, although the fear still wormed its way inside of her. What would her guardians think? And what fate would she endure if she was to be caught.
Alexis tried not to dwell on these feelings for long, opting instead to take a look at the place she had come to live and knew so little about. The canopies of trees gave the village a very secure feeling, and the quite minimalist wooden dwellings only added to the comfort she found all around her. Life seemed slower here, but she couldn’t tell whether that was the evening bringing things to a close or if it was just the nature of life here.
She decided in that moment that she wanted to see more. What other strange secrets lurked in these woods? She packed up a few things for her time wandering and was prepared to set off when Amedia came in to check on her.
Amedia seemed to come off nice and caring. Their conversation earlier that day told Alexis a lot about her, but also about Vivian and her mysterious change of heart to take her in. Behind that rough exterior, Vivian did seem to care, but Alexis was still unsure of her motives.
“Leaving so soon are we?” Amedia chimed in “I would have thought you would need more rest after the journey here.”
Alexis hesitated a moment, then replied “everything has been so overwhelming, I thought some time out would clear my head.”
Amedia just smiled, and Alexis was unsure what to take from that. “I won’t be gone long, I just thought some fresh air would do me good.”
Amedia kept looking with an understanding look and replied “just be careful out there, the village is safe, but there is a lot out there that could be troublesome. I can’t put my finger on why, but… I care about you. I really think we could be friends.
Although she didn’t say it, Alexis agreed that their connection held potential. Amedia has been nothing but sweet and caring since Alexis arrived. Maybe in this place she could actually make friends, but only time would tell.
“I’ll be back soon enough” Alexis said, picking up her bag and heading towards the door
It was a long walk in the woods with the light fading slowly overhead. Alexis didn’t know where she was heading exactly, but she just felt as if something was pulling her Eastward and decided to follow that feeling. The evening was quiet, barely a whisper sounded around her as the light breeze shifted the leaves overhead.
After a while of walking, she noticed a change in the smell and air around her. The air became slightly cool on the breeze and it brought a refreshing feeling to her as she approached. On the other side of a thick line of trees, she stopped and noticed a small lake in a clearing on the other side, lined with stones and boulders of a variety of sizes. It was unusual for Alexis to see a natural reservoir, she was used to water being contained in crafted fountains and ducts.
It wasn’t long until Alexis heard voices from beyond the tree line entering the clearing. She hid herself and stayed quiet as she watched who might appear.
What she saw was not what she was expecting. The second person she noticed was Vivian, but it was who was with her that caught Alexis’s eye. It was a dark figure, far taller than Vivian, who gave off an air of tension.
“… And you know how I feel about strangers being so close, especially with my predicament” said the large figure, their voice quite authoritative.
“I trust her and I can’t quite explain but I can just feel…”
“You are trusting your feelings to the safety of our people. To my safety. If something were to happen to me, our entire way of living could be lost”
“I understand that” said Vivian, a bit exacerbated from the interaction “but I have good reason to believe…”
“If you feel so strongly about this, you are to bring her to me.” She looked over towards where Alexis was hiding, although unsure if the figure could actually see her there. Her piercing red eyes seemed to look right through her, and although scary, there was an odd beauty to them “I will descern this one for myself”
Alexis, fearful for being caught took the next opportunity to turn around and run.
I will likely expand on this further as I get through the writing process. I’m still working out exactly how I want the story to go as I am giving it a rework after years taking a break from in. For now, as I am working through my cognitive dysfunction, this is a good enough point to start for me. I don’t write to follow the “rules” set in place for writers, I just put down what feels right to me. If every writer followed the same set of rules, writing would lose its artistic value. Create from your heart, not from a set of rules. Let the rules you hold your writing to be ones from your heart, and always be open to changes in those rules. In other words, keep things fresh in a way you enjoy, that’s what matters most
